Vertical Ad Specs: TikTok, Reels & YouTube Shorts (Plus the 16:9 Sibling)

Vertical video ads look like the easiest format to produce: one canvas, one ratio, ship it everywhere. The canvas really is identical — 1080 × 1920 px on TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram/Facebook Reels alike. What is not identical is the interface each platform draws over it, and that is where adapted creatives fail.

This guide covers all three vertical surfaces plus the horizontal YouTube surface, because a YouTube campaign almost always needs both and they share nothing — not ratio, not safe zones, not even viewing distance.

Three platforms, three overlay maps

This is the table no single vendor publishes, because no vendor documents its competitors. Measured against a 1080 × 1920 canvas:

TikTok is the most aggressive of the three: between the bottom block and the right rail it reserves close to a third of the screen. The reliable content window on TikTok is roughly 900 × 1290 px, weighted toward the upper-left. A design centred in the geometric middle of the canvas will sit lower and further right than it looks in your editor.

Intersect all three maps and you get the region that survives everywhere: approximately x: 40–940, y: 250–1420. That is about 55% of the frame, centred slightly above the vertical midpoint. Design inside it and one 9:16 export runs on all three platforms without per-platform surgery — which is usually worth more than squeezing a few extra pixels out of each.

File weight matters more here than anywhere else

The ~500 KB practical ceiling on TikTok image placements is unusually tight — roughly a tenth of what Meta tolerates comfortably. A 1080 × 1920 export saved at high quality routinely lands above it, and the platform's own re-compression to fit is noticeably worse than what you would produce deliberately.

Export JPG at quality 80 rather than 90 and check the file size before uploading. Flat colour backgrounds compress well and photographic ones do not, so a design that sits comfortably under the limit in one campaign may exceed it in the next with the same dimensions. This is the one platform where it is worth checking the number rather than trusting a preset.

Why square still matters on TikTok

TikTok accepts 1:1 creatives for several placements, and Spark-style boosts render them letterboxed. A 1080 × 1080 export is worth shipping when your media plan spans TikTok plus feed-first platforms: it keeps one visual language everywhere while the 9:16 asset does the full-screen work.

The 16:9 sibling: YouTube thumbnails and in-stream

YouTube's horizontal surface follows completely different rules from Shorts, and a campaign that treats them as one export produces thumbnails with the duration badge sitting on the product.

The bottom-right corner of every thumbnail carries the duration badge, covering roughly 15% of the width. More importantly, thumbnails render as small as 168 × 94 px in search results and watch-page sidebars. If your headline is not readable at that size it is decoration, not communication — three to five words at heavy weight is the practical ceiling.

Tip · Faces measurably lift thumbnail click-through, but only when they are large. A face should occupy at least 20% of the thumbnail height to register at search-result scale.

Why vertical creatives get skipped in the first second

Vertical placements are the only ad environment where the user's thumb is already positioned over the dismiss gesture before your ad appears. That changes what the first frame has to do. A feed ad can afford a build — establish a scene, then reveal the offer. A vertical ad cannot: if the frame the user lands on does not communicate something, the swipe happens before the second beat.

For static image placements this means the composition has to work as a poster rather than as an opening shot. Product visible, benefit stated, brand identifiable — all simultaneously, all inside the safe window. Creatives that were designed as the first frame of a video sequence tend to fail here, because a good opening frame is deliberately incomplete.

Designing for how vertical ads are actually watched

Two conditions apply to vertical placements that do not apply to feed ads. First, they are watched in dark rooms at low brightness — thin light-grey text that reads perfectly on a desktop monitor disappears. Second, they are watched with the thumb hovering over the skip region, so the message has to land in the first beat rather than building.

Check every vertical creative at roughly 30% screen brightness before shipping. It takes seconds and catches the contrast failures that no spec sheet will warn you about.

Adapting a feed creative to vertical

The classic failure is a 1:1 product shot centre-cropped to 9:16, which removes both side margins and usually part of the product or logo with them. A correct adaptation is compositional rather than subtractive: the subject moves into the safe window, the background is extended from the source image's own material, and text blocks restack vertically instead of side-by-side.
